The Victorian Institute of Education is an Australian learning college based in Haymarket, Sydney. Located within 5 minutes walking distance of the nearest train station, this college attracts a wide number of students every year. When they needed a commercial fit out to increase the capacity of their site to accommodate for more students, we were called in to help. The capacity of the main floor had to increase from 60 students to almost double at 110 students.
We started with a demolition of the existing kitchen, tearoom and break out area. To make space for new beginnings and significant changes like this, sometimes we need to completely demolish the existing surrounding wall structures in the affected areas. We often do with demolition work, it can improve the health and safety of the finished project. For example, any mould or dirt that may be stuck in the existing structure is removed during a demolition. Further to this, to ensure the safety of the new build – it is often safer to start from scratch.
Then, it was time for design. Designing helps us to plan out the space and requirements. When the construction took place, we implemented a new ambulant toilet, new disabled bathroom and air lock. Everything was installed new, from the ceilings to the lighting, power, emergency lights and exits. To ensure the new space would last for many years to come, we applied new waterproofing throughout and installed new flooring & paintwork too – for the perfect finish.
Other aspects of this project included mechanical ventilation, fire services, hydraulic plumbing services including slab scanning prior to core hole penetrations. In the bathrooms, we supplied and installed all new personal care items including hand dryers, handrails, toilets suites, hand basins and mirrors.
